Workshop

Where sawdust and welding smoke share a room.

UPVOTERED is a small team and a workshop. We work both the wood and the steel ourselves; the drawing board is a few steps from the welder.

The workshop — Landscape, 2400×1600 px — bench, machines, daylight

01Who we are

A small team that draws, cuts, welds and finishes furniture. Having the same hands on a piece from start to finish gives us two things: we know why everything is the way it is, and you know exactly who to ask. We work out of a shop on Auckland Street in Dorchester, Boston, and every piece is built there.

02How we think

Good furniture is a few right parts. So the collection is built on a handful of repeating components: the same leg section, the same joint, the same edge chamfer. Sizes change; the language stays.

03What we like

A visible weld, growth rings on an edge, a corner rounded by hand. And what we don’t: hidden chipboard, joints that can’t come apart, legs that wobble after two years.

Hands at work — Portrait, 1600×2000 px — sanding, welding mask, measuring
Detail — Square, 1200×1200 px — shavings, weld seam, end grain

Rules of the bench

  1. 01

    Few parts, right joints

Nothing added for show; every joint has a job.

  2. 02

    Repairability

Tops that can be sanded, steel that can be recoated, screws that can be replaced.

  3. 03

    Honest materials

If we say solid, it’s solid. If we ever use veneer, we’ll say so.

  4. 04

    Respect for the measure

One leg a millimetre out spoils the whole table.

The life of a piece

  1. 01

    Sketch

The idea, the size, the room. We talk it through on paper first.

  2. 02

    Drawing

Every joint and hole is dimensioned. Nothing is cut until you sign off.

  3. 03

    Cutting

Boards are picked, acclimatized and cut; steel tube and sheet are cut to size.

  4. 04

    Welding & joinery

Steel is welded and ground; wood is glued up, flattened and sanded.

  5. 05

    Finishing

Hard wax oil for the wood; powder coat, blackening or brushing for the steel. Layer by layer, by hand.

  6. 06

    Packing

Corners protected, parts labeled, fixings in the box.
